By the year 2031, the population of Guelph is expected to grow from the current 118,000 to 175,000 residents.

The goals of the City of Guelph Community Energy Initiative to be achieved by 2031 are:

To use 50% less energy per capita
Consume less energy per capita than comparable Canadian cities
Witness a 40% reduction in the summer electricity peak load

To encourage and facilitate community-based renewable and alternative energy systems
25% of energy to come from local renewable energy resources
20% of energy provided by solar by 2031
30% of energy provided by efficient combined heat and power (cogeneration) systems

To reduce greenhouse gases and lower the community's carbon footprint
Produce 60% less greenhouse gas emissions per capita, an amount lower than the2006 per capita global average
